What Does Gouda Cheese Taste Like?

by Simully

Gouda has a slightly nutty and bitter tastet that become stronger the longer it is aged. It is not usually described a sharp taste unless it is a very old and special gouda. It is a great for everyday use, and is often available in both slices and grated. The texture for a non-aged gouda is quite similar to mozarella, but a bit firmer. The more it is aged, the closer it gets to parmesan in texture (not in taste!).  A young gouda is perfect for someone is not into cheease, whereas an aged gouda can be a great experience even for a cheese lover.

What Is Gouda Cheese

Gouda cheese is made from cow’s milk and was originally made in the netherlands, but has since been spread to a wide variety of countries, many of who have a ”spin” on the original.  It is widely available in most grocery stores, with a young more bland version that can be used for everyday stuff. If you need an older one, you probably have to go to a cheese store.

How To Store Gouda Cheese

Gouda cheese should be stored in the fridge. Ideally it should be wrapped in completly, as it has a tendency to get a bit hard and chewy if exposed to air for a long time. This is especially important if you have slices, as they are more affected by this. If you leave the cheese out of the fridge, it can still last for a while, but be very aware of any foul smells or discoloring.

How Do You Know If Gouda Cheese Has Gone Bad

Sometimes it can be hard to tell if a cheese has gone bad. Gouda is quite similar. If you have a young gouda it is easier. If it smells a lot stronger than usual or have any kind of odd smell, then chances are you shouldn’t eat it. If you have an aged gouda, it can be a bit trickier to tell, as the strong smell it already has can mask some of the bad ones. In this case you should consider how it has been stored and for how long. Has it been in the fridge for one day and has a strong smell? It is probably just how the cheese it. Has weeks gone by, however, it is probably best to be on the safe side and get rid of it. Once again, any kind of discoloring should be an immediate red flag.
