What Does Veal Taste Like

by Simully

Compared to other meats that make you feel like you’ve eaten a brick, veal feels energizing. Veal is firm and has a velvety texture. Veal and beef are often compared with one another. However, the meat of veal is tenderer than beef.

Because veal is tender, it is easier to digest. The color of Veal meat is grayish pink and has a slight red hue to the flesh. The history of veal is as vivid as its hue; it is the most ‘historical’ meat used in Italian cuisine. You can use veal in place of white meat because it blends well with white cram and white wine.

What is Veal

Veal is the meat of younger calves between the ages of 6 to 8 months. Veal is known for its high-quality tenderness and flavor. It is the meat of a younger animal that has not been used for breeding. In addition, veal has a high portion of nutrients and proteins.

The slaughtering of veals used to be a sport in Europe, but it has since been banned. There are seven types of Veal cuts, including:

  • Leg (round)
  • Sirloin
  • Loin
  • Shoulder
  • Front Shank.
  • Breast

How to store veal

If you want to store veal, keep it below 40 F in the refrigerator. It is advised not to keep the veal meat at room temperature. Packaged veal can last in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 days. If you plan to use the Veal meat after 3 to 5 days, you should freeze it.

To freeze the Veal meat, first clean and then wrap its pieces in aluminum foil. It would be best to keep in mind to press the air out of the packet to allow the meat to stay fresh for a longer period.

How do you know if veal has gone bad

The best indication for if your Veal meat has gone bad is its odor and taste. Rotten Veal meat has a foul smell and sour taste.

If you feel like the texture of Veal meat has changed where it feels slimier, the quality has most likely deteriorated. When the texture of meat feels sticky, that means it has attracted bacteria. Another indication is the change in the color of the meat.

Dishes with Veal

Dishes that you can try with Veal meat are as follows:

  • Veal Marsala with Mushrooms – Fry Veal cutlets in a mushroom sauce and add Italian Marsala wine. Cover the dish with Saffron rice and serve it hot for dinner.
  • Veal Steak with Caramelized Onions – Cook the Veal steak and caramelize the onions on the side. Serve the dish hot with mashed potatoes or sautéed vegetables.
  • Veal with Mushrooms and pepper – Cook Veal in a skillet and add green and red pepper. After 10 minutes, add mushrooms and tomato sauce. Cook for 40 minutes and serve it with mashed potatoes.
  • Breaded Veal cutlets: Coat the veal with flour, egg, and breadcrumbs. Pan fry them and serve them hot with a sauce of your own choice.
